Create Your Own Bucket List: Because Really, What Are You Waiting For?
by Kathy Sherwood
There’s a moment in everyone’s life, usually after finding themselves accidentally binging a travel show, where they sit back and think, “What am I doing with my life?” And then promptly return to scrolling social media. That moment, my friend, is your cue to grab a pen, a scrap of paper—or, let’s be real, your phone—and start jotting down a bucket list. Because here’s the deal: life’s got this sneaky way of zipping by, and if you don’t stop and yell “Pineapple!” every once in a while, you’ll miss it.
Now, a bucket list isn’t just about jumping out of planes or learning how to juggle flaming swords (although, that would be cool). It’s about taking a good, hard look at the world, and saying, “Yeah, I want to do THAT.”
But where do you even start? Let’s take a journey—a story, if you will—about how to craft a bucket list so enticing that even your teenage self would be impressed. Spoiler alert: it’s all about dreaming big, getting a little weird, and not being afraid to get lost along the way.
It’s about taking a good, hard look at the world, and saying, “Yeah, I want to do THAT.”
Step 1: The Childhood Dream Dilemma
Let’s start with a little time travel, back to when you were seven years old and the world was full of possibilities. Back then, you didn’t just dream of being an astronaut or a rock star—you knew you would be. There was no doubt in your mind that one day, you’d be wearing a space suit and signing autographs at the same time. Somewhere along the way, though, you got distracted by things like taxes, laundry, and making sure your socks match.
But here’s the thing: those childhood dreams are still a great place to start when building a bucket list. Sure, you may not be in NASA training right now, but you can totally book a trip to see the Northern Lights, or hop on a zero-gravity flight (which, by the way, is about as close to space as most of us are getting).
So grab that pen—or phone—and start writing down those wild, unfiltered dreams. Maybe you wanted to be a paleontologist? Plan a trip to dig up some real-life dinosaur bones. Did you always want to be a marine biologist? Well, the dolphins are still out there, waiting for a high-five.

Step 2: Get Inspired (A.K.A. Fall Down the Internet Rabbit Hole)
If you’re sitting there, staring at a blank screen, thinking, “I have no idea what I want to do with my life,” relax. You’re not alone. Thankfully, the internet exists, and it’s basically a giant treasure trove of bucket list ideas just waiting for you. A quick search will have you dreaming of everything from learning to make authentic pasta in Italy to zip-lining over jungles in Costa Rica (and yes, you’ll want to do both).
But here’s a friendly warning: once you start googling “bucket list ideas,” prepare to lose a few hours. You’ll start with “best places to visit before I die” and before you know it, you’re watching a tutorial on how to build your own kayak out of recycled bottles. The point is, inspiration is everywhere. You just need to let yourself fall into it.
Step 3: The Great Brainstorm
Alright, now that you’ve got a few ideas swimming around in your head, it’s time to throw caution to the wind and brainstorm like there’s no tomorrow. Seriously, don’t hold back. Let the wild ideas flow. Write down everything—everything—that comes to mind. Even that dream of learning to tap dance on roller skates. (Hey, it’s your bucket list. No judgment here.)
If it helps, break your list into categories. Like:
Jot it all down. The weirder, the better. You can always edit later. For now, let your imagination run wild.
Step 4: The Buddy System
Here’s the truth about bucket lists: they’re way more fun when shared. Sure, some things on your list will be solo adventures (cue the dramatic solo backpacking montage), but others? You’ll want some company. So gather your friends, family, or that one coworker who’s always down for an adventure, and start comparing lists.
There’s a good chance your friends will have some epic ideas you’ve never even considered. Plus, when you’ve got a buddy planning with you, it’s a lot harder to chicken out of that bungee jumping trip.
Step 5: Prioritize Like a Pro
Now that you’ve got a list the length of a novel, it’s time to get serious. Because while I believe in the magic of endless possibilities, there’s also a little thing called reality. Time, money, and that pesky job of yours might mean you can’t cross everything off the list this year. But that doesn’t mean you can’t start somewhere.
It’s about living with intention, curiosity, and a healthy sense of humor
Look at your list and start ranking. What’s at the top? What’s realistic for the next 12 months? Maybe you won’t make it to Bali this year, but you can totally plan that road trip down the coast or sign up for salsa lessons.
Step 6: Action Time, Baby!
The biggest secret to a successful bucket list? Actually doing the things on it. I know, mind-blowing stuff. But seriously, nothing feels better than crossing off an item from your list and knowing you’ve made it happen. Whether it’s something as simple as trying a new cuisine or as grand as traveling to a new country, take the first step. Book the ticket. Sign up for the class. Reserve that hotel. Whatever it takes, just do it. You’ll be amazed at how one small action snowballs into a lifetime of memories.
Why the Heck Not?
At the end of the day, a bucket list isn’t about completing every last item. It’s about living with intention, curiosity, and a healthy sense of humor. It’s about looking at life and saying, “Why the heck not?” So go on, start your list, and get ready to live a life that’s worth telling stories about. After all, the world’s a big place, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t experience every last bit of it.
